Abstract:
This dissertation provides a significant contribution to the study of racial residential settlement by offering a multi-method examination of racially and ethnically diverse neighborhoods. First, a systematic analysis, using an innovative measure of diversity, was conducted to assess the extent of racially and ethnically diverse urban neighborhoods in New York and Chicago during the 1980s. Data indicate that although overall levels of segregation remain high, stably diverse neighborhoods did exist in each city. In addition, only a small percentage of these diverse neighborhoods experienced rapid transition or "panic" over the ten year period, calling into question the perceived inevitability of racial transition. Second, field research, including over 40 interviews with community leaders, in Jackson Heights (New York) and Uptown (Chicago) offered multifaceted insight into the social dynamics and processes involved in maintaining diversity.
